Bruno and the Night That Wasn’t Scary
For Bruno, so that the night will always be a friend.

Bruno turned off his bedroom light and hugged Tito, his stuffed bunny. The darkness made him clutch his blanket a little tighter. Bruno held his feet still and listened to the silence. “Tito, will you stay with me?” he asked. The blanket felt warm over his knees.

In the dark, Bruno noticed a shape beside the bed. He hugged Tito tight and looked again. It was his usual pillow, propped against the wall. “Oh, it’s you,” he said softly. He put it near Tito and breathed slowly. The room smelled of clean sheets.

Bruno reached out for his bedside table. His glass of water and his closed storybook were still there. Everything was in its place. Outside, the moon cast a soft stripe across the floor. “I can see it from here,” he murmured. Tito rested under his arm without moving.

Then Bruno pulled the blanket up to his shoulders. It brushed against his chin. He heard the soft ticking of the bedroom clock. Bruno listened for a while. “Good night, clock,” he whispered. Tito was tucked in beside him. The pillow was still nearby, and so was the moon.

Bruno yawned. Tito was still beside him. The blanket was still warm. The ticking clock sounded farther and farther away. Bruno closed his eyes, then opened them again for a moment. “Good night, Tito,” he said very softly. He stroked the stuffed bunny with one finger. Then he let his hand rest.

Bruno left his hand on Tito. The pillow was nearby. The blanket covered his shoulders. He heard the clock once more. Bruno took a deep breath. Then he breathed slowly. The moonlight was still on the floor. “I’m here,” he whispered. He closed his eyes. Tito stayed tucked under his arm.
